Project Brief

The Dwyer project in Clifton Hill aimed to create a functional and aesthetically pleasing front entry on a challenging sloping block, ensuring the design harmonised with the heritage theme of the surrounding area. Our goal was to provide a seamless landscape design and build solution that respected the site’s heritage overlay.

Scope of Work

Design and Build:
This project required a comprehensive landscape design and build approach, from initial consultation and design to the final construction. With a significant heritage overlay, we submitted and secured a planning permit from the City of Yarra Council, ensuring all aspects of the project met regulatory requirements.

On-Site Scope of Works

• Council Liaison: Coordinated with the City of Yarra Council to ensure all project aspects complied with local regulations.
• Footpath Occupation Permit: Secured the necessary permit for footpath occupation during construction.
• Traffic Management Plan: Implemented a traffic management plan, including footpath closure and pedestrian traffic direction, to ensure safety and compliance.
• Foundation Engineering: Conducted engineering work to stabilize the foundation on the sloping block.
• Recycled Red Brick Retaining Wall: Built a retaining wall using recycled red bricks to match the heritage aesthetic of Clifton Hill’s inner north suburbs.
• Drainage Plan: Developed and implemented an effective drainage plan to manage water flow and prevent erosion.
• Bluestone Paving: Installed bluestone paving for a durable and visually appealing surface.
• Irrigation and Lighting: Implemented a fully autonomous irrigation and lighting system for convenience and ambiance.
• Planting: Selected and planted small shrubs and ground covers to soften the appearance of the brick wall and cascade over the front, enhancing the visual appeal.
• Relocation of Utilities: Managed the relocation of water and gas mains to accommodate the new design.

Design Highlights

The use of recycled red brick for the retaining wall was a key design element, chosen to maintain the area’s heritage character. The small shrubs and ground covers were intentionally selected to soften the brick wall, adding a natural, cascading effect. A feature tree, the Crepe Myrtle Natchez, was planted to provide summer shade and seasonal flower interest, creating a welcoming and attractive front entry.
